History & Background
To speak of the largest mine in the world, we must first discuss “San Pablo de Borbur”, a Colombian municipality located in the Western Province in the Department of Boyacá.
Also known as the “Emerald Municipality of Colombia”, San Pablo de Borbur shares a history similar to Muzo, since Muzo Indians were its first settlers and later, Spanish colonizers called “Looters or Saqueadores” in Spanish took control of extracting emeralds from this magical land.
This municipality and its renowned mine called “Coscuez” sit about 65 km from Chiquinquirá, the provincial capital. Otanche and Pauna border the area to the north, Muzo borders to the south, Maripí and Pauna border to the east, and Otanche lies to the west.
The lands where miners locate the Coscuez mine lack the mythological uniqueness found in places like Muzo, but visitors can see the hill “Fura” to the northeast. According to Muisca mythology, God “Aré” originally created Fura as the first woman on earth, and directly across from it stands the hill “Tena,” representing the first man.
After Fura violated the divine mandate of fidelity and Tena committed suicide, local legends transformed them into these hills.
